A state of emergency's been declared in Westland, after torrential rain has caused serious slips and flooding throughout the region.
The Waiho Bridge at Franz Josef was destroyed by floodwaters yesterday - stranding dozens of people.
West Coast-Tasman MP Damian O'Connor says it's happened before so engineers and NZTA are used to the situation and will have the bridge reinstated in the next couple of days.
But he says a long term solution is well overdue.
O'Connor says it's essential the road is kept open for tourism purposes.
