More than a thousand lightning strikes have been recorded across the Bay of Plenty region since midnight

MetService weather forecaster Hordur Thordarson said the good news was, the lightning should make way for a high of 21 degrees today.

Thordarson says the Bay of Plenty has seen a lot of electrical storms out at sea, with a lot of cold air up high.

But he says the sea is still warm from the summer.
