Otago researchers are helping tackle tuberculosis in Indonesia

Otago researchers are helping tackle tuberculosis in Indonesia

Researchers from the Otago Global Health Institute will receive 450-thousand dollars over three years to carry out the study - to help improve the management of TB.

The funds are from the e-Asia Joint Research Programme and the Health Research Council of New Zealand.

TB is the third leading cause of death in Indonesia - with one million cases of the disease in 2014/15.

McAuley Professor of International Health Philip Hill says less than ten percent of diagnosed cases are notified, which complicates management of the disease.

He says the results will be of local and global interest, shedding light on an issue of importance to global TB control.
