A narrow escape for a group of patrons at a Whangarei tavern

A narrow escape for a group of patrons at a Whangarei tavern

A witness has described the moment so-called "heroes" wrestled a loaded shotgun from a man on Wednesday night.

The gunman and an associate - who was holding an object similar to a screwdriver - charged into the Tikipunga Tavern demanding money just before 11 o'clock.

An eyewitness, who didn't want to be named, says one of the bar patrons started throwing plates at the man before pouncing on him.

One shot was fired in the commotion but everyone escaped uninjured.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
