The 49er sailors have moved into second at the latest regatta in Genoa, with the medal race scheduled to start tomorrow.
Yachting New Zealand's High Performance Director Ian Stewart says their performance so far has been particularly impressive.
He says they haven't been back in the boats for long, and they are racing in light breezes which European crews specialise in.
Fellow kiwis Isaac McHardie and William McKenzie are just two spots back in fourth.
It's been a bad day for Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders in the Nacra class, they've dropped from second to 10th.
In the 49erFX Alex Maloney and Molly Meech are 23rd.
