Pilot Andrew Hefford, paramedic John Lambeth and winchman Lester Stevens are recovering in Invercargill's Southland Hospital after they were picked up from a beach on a sub-Antarctic island.
It's understood the men swam to shore in the freezing sea, in the middle of the night.
The team from Southern Lakes Helicopters were on a medi-vac mission.
Southland Mayor, Gary Tong says he's been to the area the men were picked up from, and it's not white sandy beaches.
