Figures from waste water testing show 16 kilograms of the illicit drug is used every week.
It's most commonly found in Northland, whereas cocaine is prevalent in Auckland - and MDMA in Canterbury.
Independent drug researcher, Geoff Noller, says MDMA is a far less harmful drug.
He says methamphetamine causes much more damage.
