The quake was centred about 70 kilometres southwest of Lae , at the eastern edge of the mountainous country, at a depth of 127 kilometres.
The town's fire department says no one has called in to report damage or injuries so far.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there's no threat of a tsunami.
