At this time last year, 137 had died.
National road policing manager Superintendent Steve Greally says the increase is extremely disappointing.
He says the simple and inescapable truth is that less speed means less harm in a crash.
Greally says drivers must give the roads their full attention.
He says they must drive to the conditions, not drive drunk, drugged, or fatigued, and must use seatbelts.
