38m slide connecting two streets in Spain resort town of Estepona closed over safety concerns

The 38-metre-long slide, built as a faster alternative to a 10-minute walk in the resort town of Estepona, is shut by the council less than 24 hours after opening.

A 38-metre-long slide built to connect two streets in a Spanish town has been closed for investigation less than 24 hours after opening, due to reports of multiple injuries.

The slide was built as a faster alternative to a 10-minute walk in the resort town of Estepona and was advertised by the local council as a method of travel for all ages.

However, its gradient of between 32 and 34 degrees raised concerns on social media, with videos circulating showing injuries and people shooting off the bottom of the slide.

One social media user joked that "in Estepona they have already legalised euthanasia", referring to the concerns over the safety of the ride.

Another social media user tweeted photos of bruises and scrapes which she said was from going down the slide, adding that she "flew 2 metres".

The council of Estepona released a statement saying it had ordered a review of the slide, adding that the safety and approval of it had "been certified by the specialist installation company".

The statement also said the video on social media was an "isolated incident", adding that the slide had been tested by "more than a thousand users" without any incidents.

Should only be used in an 'appropriate manner'

The stainless steel slide has been dubbed the longest urban slide in Spain.

Since the backlash, the council has made efforts to inform its residents that the slide should only be used in an "appropriate manner" to "avoid risks".

These rules include sliding while seated with arms crossed and not to use the slide when it is being used by someone else.

The slide was opened on May 9 as a part of an expansion of the Los Ninos Park area.
