Gale force winds could foil South Islanders hoping for a beautiful Southern lights display

MetService has issued a severe wind warning for the Canterbury High Country, as well as the Clutha, Southland, Stewart Island and Tararua Districts.

Earlier, the Otago Daily Times reported the Aurora Australis would be visible tonight in parts of Southland and Otago.

It is the second such event this week, with the Sun twice firing plasma towards Earth.

Residents may have more luck tomorrow morning, when MetService says the westerly flow is expected to move away.
