It's been in place in the Auckland and Whangarei district courts since December 2016.
The Auckland District Law Society's Marie Dyhrberg QC says the programme needs to ensure it maintains fair trial rights for a defended person.
She says for the defence, it will remain a good programme as long as it doesn't interfere with preparation timeframes.
Dyhrberg says if the programme fixes the date of a trial, so you know it's going to go ahead and plan accordingly.
