Police believe the man robbed a service station in Ashburton around 4.30am - in a stolen vehicle.
They say he then drove through a number of South Canterbury towns - ramming a security guard vehicle and police car.
Police say the man committed a second burglary before setting both stolen vehicles on fire.
A third vehicle was later pulled over on Gloucester Street in Christchurch... and a second man was taken into custody.
