A driver who veered across the centreline, causing a fatal crash in South Waikato, has avoided jail time

A driver who veered across the centreline, causing a fatal crash in South Waikato, has avoided jail time

Jonathan Coombe's truck collided with a car carrying two sisters, and two young children, at Awakino in February.

Darrelee Tuhoro, was killed in the crash.... and her sister, Amber, suffered head injuries.

Coombe has pleaded guilty to the crime - but told the court he couldn't recall the crash.

That left police to infer he fell asleep or was badly distracted, given a previous conviction for driving too slow because of tiredness

The community magistrate at the Hamilton District Court accepted there was no intent in the crash, sentencing Coombe to 180 hours of community work, six months supervision and 7000 dollars of emotional harm.

He was also disqualified from driving for 15 months.
