MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Westland, Fiordland and parts of Otago from this evening.
A spokesperson says the rain will be confined to the Western South island for now - but a second front is expected tomorrow.
They say it could bring torrential rain, thunderstorms and strong gusts to western regions - lasting until at least Thursday
MetService says the downpour may cause river levels to rise rapidly - and surface flooding and slips are also possible.
