A car has been towed from the Buller River after it burst its banks

A car has been towed from the Buller River after it burst its banks

The West Coast has been hammered by torrential rain for the last few days - with no end in sight.

Emergency services were called to Inangahua Junction - where it appeared a vehicle was in distress.

A Fire Service spokesperson says they managed to rescue the car - but there's no suggestion anyone was inside.

NZTA is advising drivers to avoid the Buller Gorge overnight as the river has reached its alarm level.

Maintenance manager Moira Whinham says it's likely State Highway 6 will be closed overnight.
