A new Otago University study has found employees turning up to work worse for wear - or not turning up at all - are costing workplaces 1.65 billion dollars a year in lost productivity.
Lead researcher Dr Trudy Sullivan says presentee-ism - where people show up to work but their performance suffers - makes up 80 percent of this loss.
But she says the problem could be even more severe.
Sullivan says many co-workers also feel they have to cover for hungover staff - which wasn't included in the costs.
