Four players were forced to take cover behind a bank when they were repeatedly shot at.
None were hurt, but the group was left shaken by the incident.
Senior Sergeant Steve Pivac says the man will face a charge relating to careless use of a firearm.
He says police also seized two firearms, an air pistol and an air rifle with telescope sights, in connection with the incident.
