Central Otago residents have been shaken awake by a powerful earthquake

A magnitude 5.5 quake struck 40 kilometres north-east of Milford Sound shortly before half past three this morning.

It had a shallow depth of five kilometres.

It's been felt strongly throughout the Queenstown - Wanaka regions, as well as along the West Coast and Dunedin.
