At least 35 aftershocks have been recorded following a magnitude 5.5 earthquake near Milford Sound this morning

At least 35 aftershocks have been recorded following a magnitude 5.5 earthquake near Milford Sound this morning

The earthquake struck just before 3.30am, at a depth of five kilometres.

GNS duty seismologist Jonathan Hanson says it would have given people in the area quite a shake.

He says it appears to have occurred on the Alpine Fault.

Hanson says its reminder the fault system remains active, and there's potential for larger earthquakes to occur on it.
