Calls for landlords to be licensed

Calls for landlords to be licensed

An Auckland landlord is being fined almost 180-thousand dollars for breaking tenancy laws, but still has tenants.

Property Managers Institute Chairwoman Karen Withers says licensing isn't an instant fix... but it would help.

She says bad eggs will always be bad eggs, but a licensing scheme would stop irresponsible landlords from carrying on doing it.

Withers says we'd have to ensure any licensing scheme wouldn't exacerbate our housing shortage.
