The two week closure of the West Coast's main highway has put a noticeable dent on visitor numbers

The two week closure of the West Coast's main highway has put a noticeable dent on visitor numbers

New figures from Stats NZ show guest nights in the region's hotels, motels, backpackers and holiday parks were down 12-percent on the same month last year.

Guest nights in Otago and Southland also experienced falls, compared to a year ago.

By contrast, national guest nights increased 5.1-percent, due to this year's timing of Easter Weekend before Anzac Day.

All North Island regions experienced an increase in April, compared to April last year.
