The 49-year-old appeared in the Dunedin District Court this morning accused of willfully ill-treating an animal causing death.
Duty lawyer Max Winders says he applied for name suppression on the basis that the man's identity may be an issue at trial.
Judge Dominic Flatley imposed suppression until the defendant's second appearance next month.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment or a one-hundred thousand-dollar-fine.
