There was extra security in court today as a man appeared in relation to a rural Waikato shooting

The Kawhia incident left one man dead and three others injured.

The 37-year old has appeared in Te Awamutu District Court, facing charges of murder, wounding with intent to harm and selling a Class C drug.

Court security staff searched every person who attended, and members of the Armed Offenders Squad are standing guard on the street.

Earlier this month, the man appeared in the Hamilton District Court, charged with possessing a newly prohibited semi-automatic rifle.
