Police say two girls were approached by a man after school last Friday.
They say he spoke to them and when he attempted to grab one of the girl's hands - they ran away and sought assistance from a member of the public.
An area search was conducted but no one who fit the description of the man was found.
The man was described as aged between 50 and 70-years-old, about 190 centimetres tall with ginger hair and a skull tattoo on his right hand.
Papatoetoe South School has issued a notice to parents, asking them to report to police if a black van with a smashed back window covered in plastic is seen.
