Police launched a homicide investigation after the baby died in Starship Hospital over the weekend, almost a week after he had been rushed there with serious injuries.
The toddler's mother had five older children who were previously uplifted by Oranga Tamariki.
Police say the injuries don't appear to be accidental, and investigators are working hard to work out what caused the injuries.
A scene examination and post-mortem have been carried out and police are speaking to a number of people.
