67-year-old Deborah Jeanne Long was celebrating her partner's birthday at Akaroa's Te Wepu Intrepid Pods in early March.
Coroner Anna Tutton says Long had been drinking alcohol before getting into the spa, and kept drinking while in there.
Her partner heard a glass smashing and turned to find Long unresponsive in the pool.
Tutton says she died from cardiovascular collapse due to being intoxicated, immersed in a spa pool and having hypertensive heart disease.
Pathologist, doctor Sage, says the woman was five-times over the legal limit of alcohol for drivers.
