Kiwi sailor Sam Meech remains in hunt for medal at Laser class world championships

Kiwi sailor Sam Meech remains in the hunt for a medal after the first day of gold fleet racing at the Laser class world championships in Japan

That's despite slipping a spot in the overall standings.

He's fallen to second, after a 17th and eighth in his two races.

He says there's still two more days in conditions which look like they could be good for points.

Fellow-New Zealander Tom Saunders is up to 11th, while George Gautrey is 15th.

Rio Games gold medalist, Aussie Tom Burton, leads by two points.
