A Papatoetoe couple were taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition yesterday after using charcoal to heat massage oil for their newborn grandchild.
A family member found them unconscious in their home.
Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Daniel Nicholson says charcoal should never be used indoors as it produces significant amounts of carbon monoxide.
