Eleven guns were stolen from the Palmerston North police station in April.
The incident led to a national audit being carried out to check the security and storage of firearms at all police sites.
Deputy Commissioner of district operations, John Tims, says the results show the majority of sites have robust security and storage, but improvements are needed.
He says sites identified as needing immediate attention have been treated as a priority.
Work to improve these locations includes upgrading alarms and installing CCTV systems.
One firearm remains outstanding from the Palmerston North burglary, which police remain focused on finding.
