Independent Police Conduct Authority rules officers "abused their power" in South Auckland arrest

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has ruled two officers "abused their power" during an arrest in South Auckland

The report found the officers used excessive force arresting the driver of a stolen Ute in Ramarama in 2016.

While arresting and handcuffing the driver one officer deliberately kneed the man twice in the head, causing facial injuries.

A second officer intentionally stepped on his leg.

Authority Chair, Judge Colin Doherty, says the officers used intentional and gratuitous force against the man while he was in a vulnerable position.

The first officer resigned from the Police force after the incident - and was discharged without conviction after pleading guilty to wounding with reckless disregard.

The second officer was sanctioned by Police following an employment investigation.
