Dawn Baxendale is replacing Dr Karleen Edwards - who led the organisation for five years.
Baxendale left her role as CEO of the Birmingham City Council in the UK to take up the reins.
A Council spokesperson says she'll earn 495 thousand dollars a year - plus a package that includes superannuation.
The previous CEO started on a salary of 395 thousand.
Baxendale will now earn more than Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern - who received 471 thousand dollars last year.
