People with firearms - now banned as part of new legislation - are being told to hand them in during the amnesty and buy-back period.
More than 250 events will be held across the country over the next three months.
Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement says owners must clear firearms of all ammunition and put them in a safe carry bag.
The first collection is at Riccarton Racecourse on Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 3pm.
