Building and Construction Minister Jenny Salesa's announced changes allowing modest building work to go ahead without requiring full seismic strengthening.
Previously, building strengthening had to be done when any alteration was estimated to cost 25 percent of the value of an earthquake-prone building.
Rangitikei District Mayor Andy Watson says it encourages building owners to start work- without the need for the full investment to bring their building up to code compliance.
