A Christchurch man has been fined nearly five thousand dollars for starving his horse
23 July 2019
Tai Tapu resident, Rufus Culliford, has been sentenced in the Christchurch District Court today after pleading guilty to one charge of failing to provide sufficient food.
The court heard SPCA inspectors had taken and returned the elderly mare - called Tubby - multiple times since 2015.
She finally had to be put down in 2017.
Judge Kevin Phillips says Tubby suffered an extremely high level of neglect.
He says Culliford narrowly avoided jail time - and he can't own another horse for three years.
