59-year-old Lorraine Smith strangled 13-year-old Kalis Smith with a necktie in March.
Smith was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with a minimum of six years, at the High Court in Wellington today.
She had been suffering from depression and carer burnout.
Her lawyer Peter Brosnahan says she'd had a life of good character.
Brosnahan says she was dedicated to the care of those who relied upon her to the point where she had nothing left for herself.
