The council's looking into a plan to get rid of the massive parking lot of imported cars at the Ports of Auckland.
The proposal would see them immediately shifted to a south Auckland site by barge.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says the plan would mean vehicles leave the wharf the day they arrive, instead of waiting for days for trucks to take them to car yards.
He says the barges would carry about 250 cars per trip - the equivalent of 100-truckloads.
