The hosts are 227 for seven in reply to the Black Caps' 249.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Ajaz Patel has five wickets for 76 runs from 29 overs.

Elsewhere, Australia are 30 for one in reply to England's 258 on the second day of the second Ashes test at Lord's.
The tourists exited the pavilion in baggy red caps, rather than the traditional green, to mark the Ruth Strauss Foundation Day.
In a move inspired by the annual Jane McGrath Day at the Sydney test, members of the crowd were encouraged to wear red to help launch the charity set up by former England skipper Andrew Strauss.
Strauss lost his Australian-born wife Ruth in December to a rare lung cancer at age 46.
He was handed the caps by Tim Paine and his squad - they will be auctioned to help fund research.
