Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama filmed shoving rival politician in Parliament's car park

Opposition MP Pio Tikoduadua says Frank Bainimarama broke his glasses during the confrontation, recorded in footage posted to social media on Friday.

Video of Fiji's Prime Minister shoving an opposition MP has emerged on social media two weeks after the leader was accused of assaulting the politician.

Frank Bainimarama can be seen grabbing National Federation Party member Pio Tikoduadua by his jacket and pushing him backwards in the car park of the country's parliament house in Suva.

Mr Tikoduadua stumbles back a few steps and picks up what appears to be a pair of glasses that have fallen on the ground.

In the footage, which attracted more than 100,000 views within hours of being shared on the Coup Fourpointfive Facebook page, Mr Bainimarama can be heard shouting while several bodyguards close in around the two men.

Mr Tikoduadua says the video backs up his allegation that the Prime Minister verbally and physically assaulted him two weeks ago, claiming Mr Bainimarama threatened him and broke his glasses.

The MP made the accusation in Parliament before making a statement to the media.

Mr Tikoduadua filed a complaint with police, but last Friday said he had not heard back from authorities.

He says he hopes the video will speed up the police investigation.

"I am waiting in earnest for them to do their job and I keep waiting," Mr Tikoduadua said.

"And I hope with the coming of the media … it should move things a little quicker for them."

Mr Bainimarama denied the allegations through a series of posts on the Fiji First Facebook page two weeks ago.

The party said the accusation was a "blatant lie".

"If Tikoduadua was really assaulted why didn't he go straight to the police?" a post said.

"Why go to media first? Attention-seeking liars."

In a report from Radio New Zealand, Mr Bainimarama said he only "spoke sternly" during the exchange with Mr Tikoduadua.

According to the article, a police investigation into the alleged assault is ongoing.
