Temporary safety improvements are being made to one of Wellington's most hazardous highways

State Highway 58 between the Hutt and Pauatahanui will receive new road markings, electronic warning signs and better intersection lighting by the end of the year.

The stretch of road has seen more than 200 crashes in the last 10 years.

It's hoped the improvements will reduce speeding, overtaking and driver inattention.

Permanent upgrades have been delayed until more funding is available.
