The 40-year-old was airlifted to Palmerston North hospital on Saturday night.
A group of five got in trouble after ignoring warnings and skiing out of bounds.
Senior Constable Conrad Smith says because of the significant avalanche risk, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts went to huge lengths to keep people out of the area.
Smith says it's incredibly disappointing and frustrating the warnings were ignored.
