Police officers were awaiting the arrival of Aleksandr Cherushev on board a container ship over the weekend.
He's been wanted by the National Organised Crime Group for three years, after allegedly importing 1.2 million dollars worth of cocaine onboard a food vessel in 2016.
He appeared in the Nelson District Court court on Monday charged with importing and supplying cocaine.
He'll be transferred to Auckland while he awaits his second court hearing later this month.
