The University of Otago study found displaying boxes has become less common since larger graphic health warnings have been introduced.
Public health professor Nick Wilson says the study observed patrons in 56 Wellington cafes and bars.
He says it means the graphic packaging is working.
Wilson says the research saw smokers also turning packs over - to hide the largest graphic warnings.
