Age is taking its toll on 36-year-old Nick Willis, but more through pride than performance

Age is taking its toll on 36-year-old Nick Willis, but more through pride than performance

A fifth Olympics and seventh world athletics championships remain on the horizon for the New Zealand middle-distance runner.

He won the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York this week, but remains 0.99 of a second adrift of the 1500 metres qualifying time for Doha this month.

Willis requires some leniency from the selectors because his best is still inside the catered numbers.

However, he's struggled to channel youth at this year's Diamond League meets.
