A backlog of 1200 remand prisoners waiting to be sentenced - is being tackled by District Court Judges working extra hours

A backlog of 1200 remand prisoners waiting to be sentenced - is being tackled by District Court Judges working extra hours

Acting Chief District Court Judge John Walker says people have been waiting a long time.

He has allocated eight extra judge weeks to courts in Auckland, Manukau and Christchurch.

Walker says if priority isn't given to remand prisoners - they are more likely to be released at sentencing because of time already served.
