Murderer Phillip John Smith is fighting to be allowed to meet with a journalist in prison

Murderer Phillip John Smith is fighting to be allowed to meet with a journalist in prison

Smith sparked an international manhunt in 2014 when he escaped to Brazil when out on a day pass.

He's serving a life sentence for killing the father of a boy he was sexually abusing.

He has appeared by audio visual link in the High Court at Wellington today, challenging a Corrections decision not to let him have a face to face interview

The hearing is the latest in a string of legal cases he has brought against the department.

The judge's decision has been reserved.
