Regions surrounding Auckland are growing the fastest in the country

Regions surrounding Auckland are growing the fastest in the country

2018 Census data shows New Zealand's population has grown to just shy of 4.7 million people.

Census general manager Kathy Connolly says Northland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato lead the growth since the last Census.

She says 61 per cent of New Zealand's growth since 2013 was in the four northern most regions.

The West Coast was the only region to decline in population.
