Canterbury University says it's sad to hear of a student's sudden death

Police were called after the death of a male at a private residence in Ilam near the University of Canterbury last night.

A University of Canterbury spokesperson says they're supporting those affected by the loss.

They say they're committed to the wellbeing of staff and students - and free counselling is available.

Police are examining the scene and making further inquiries on behalf of the coroner.
