Waitemata and Auckland DHBs' Dr Karen Bartholomew says 52 per cent of children aged 0 to four have been hospitalised.
And an interim report into the region's 1307 total cases shows overall hospital admissions are also much higher than usual.
Bail has been denied for a Christchurch man accused of murdering an old friend.
