The Bureau of Meteorology says an unseasonal heatwave hitting western and northwestern NSW could demolish October heat records and place large swathes of the state at bushfire risk

While Sydney's top temperature is expected to reach a mild 23C today, Bourke and Brewarrina brace for their first 40C day since March.
Other places are set to exceed 37C while dust is forecast for most parts west of Griffith and Bourke.
However no bushfires are currently rated higher than "advice" alert level.
